For those who are fortunate to be on a pilgrimage in the Land of Israel during for Easter, the events tracing the last days of Jesus and salvation history are moving and memorable.
Here are just a few highlights of activities to attend, beginning on Good Friday and continuing through the end of March.
Good Friday: March 25
On this day of fasting and penance in commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, attend the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord, from Calvary to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The Prayer of the Way of the Cross with the Franciscan Friars on the Via Dolorosa, starts at the First Station of the Cross and concludes at the Holy Sepulcher. The Funeral Procession begins after dark at the Holy Sepulcher.
Holy Saturday: March 26
In memorializing Jesus after his death, the Easter Vigil, Entrance and Solemn Procession and evening prayer take place at the Holy Tomb. Presided by the Custos of the Holy, the Pontifical Celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours is held at the Mary Magdala Altar.
Easter Sunday, March 27
Join the faithful in celebrating the resurrection at the Pontifical Mass and Solemn Procession at the Holy Tomb or attend the Daily Procession at the Holy Sepulcher.
Easter Monday, March 28
Resurrection Services take place at the Garden Tomb several times during the morning, starting at sunrise. Attend the Pontifical Mass and Blessing of Bread celebrated by the Custos of the Holy Land at the Emmaus Church of Qubeibeh.
If you’re looking for post-Easter activities, tour Mt. Zion. Visit the Upper Room, where Jesus appeared to the Apostles. On Thursday, March 31, catch the Hallelujah Concert, with Psalms chanted in different languages to Costantini, Mendelssohn, Gabrieli and others, at Dormition Abbey.
