“Voluntouring”: Community service for a day

ByKenes Christian Tours April 19, 2016

Kenes Christian Tours helps pilgrims pursue even greater meaning from their trip to Israel, with a new enriching dimension. In addition to “taking in” the deep spiritual history of the land, they are also finding ways to “give back” to the country by serving people in need.

“… when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger.” (Leviticus 23:22)

Thankful for this food of the Earth

One of the most popular and rewarding activities is the National Food Bank’s food rescue program. The Leket program is named for the fallen sheaves of wheat left for the poor, such biblical matriarchs Ruth and Naomi, during ancient harvests. This labor of love enables one-time volunteers to take a morning in their touring schedules to gather food for underserved populations.

Volunteers hit the fields to glean fruits or vegetables donated by farmers, which is later distributed to populations in need.

Fun for participants of all ages, this charitable act of giving is in keeping with 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Good works benefit all

Among the “take-aways” that workers get in return are team-building and immersion in the task at hand, while learning hands-on about Israeli agriculture. There is nothing more satisfying than working in fellowship knowing you’ve played an important role in providing sustenance to others – being part of the solution.

With Israel’s tropical weather, this activity is always in season, so contact Kenes Christian Tours to add it to your itinerary.
